Obituary

Charles Edward Smith (Smitty) was born May 26, 1930 in Manning, Texas, second child to Frank Herman Smith and Willie Mae Johnson (Mur). He had an older sister, Barbara and two younger brothers, Frank and Clifford. Smitty grew up and attended primary and secondary school in Diboll, Angelina County, Texas. He graduated from Texas Western College in El Paso in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science in Geology. After attending college, he entered military service in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was being trained as a pilot when the war ended. He finished his military service in the Air Force Reserve in 1955 and then moved with his family to El Paso. Smitty lived in El Paso the majority of his life, working for Standard Oil, El Paso Sand and Gravel, and eventually owning/operating a scaffolding business. In his free time, he liked to fly, golf, and worked as a projectionist.

Survivors include: his wife, Joan; sister, Barbara Bex and spouse Jean Pierre; brother, Clifford Smith and spouse, Temple; sister-in-law, Helen Smith; children, son, Stephen R. Smith and spouse, Susan, daughter, Kimberly Gamble, son Kelly Smith and spouse Maureen, and step-daughter, Denise Kaupas and spouse Anthony, and many grand and great-grandchildren. Smitty was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Frank Smith, and a daughter, Jill Cox.

A Memorial Service will be held 10:00 AM, Saturday, September 23, 2017 at Waxahachie Funeral Home.
