IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James Ernest
Laughlin D.O.,F.A.C.O.S,F.A.O.A.O.,Mts.
March 10, 1940 – September 22, 2021
Jim was born in Stella, Missouri to Alva and Nadine Laughlin.
In his youth Jim worked at Cardwell Memorial Osteopathic Hospital in Stella. He was highly regarded by the staff and patients. His time there inspired him to become a doctor. His strong work ethics led to Jim being mentored by Dr. Silas Fountain.
In high school Jim joined the Army ROTC. After high school, while attending Kansas City University, he joined the Air Force. After becoming a doctor Jim transitioned to the Navy. Jim loved being a doctor. He was also a great teacher. He was even known for wearing his flight suit to class while teaching medical school. He diligently taught medical students, and brought many to his office. He always wanted to give back to his country, and would treat veterans at his office for free. The last twelve years of his service he asked to be assigned to the Marines where Jim dutifully served in Operation Desert Storm. In total Jim served his country for forty-three years. He was forcefully retired when he turned sixty.
Jim loved to learn. He would read philosophy at home and listen to college courses in the car. Later in his life he attended SMU. He received a Masters Degree in Theology from Perkins. Once one of Jim's grandsons bemusedly asked him how long he had been going to school. Jim replied about half of his life.
Jim volunteered his time, giving back to the community in which he loved. He selflessly helped the VFW, and every Christmas he would hand out toys to children with Toys for Tots. Jim also enjoyed volunteering with the Maypearl Fire Department.
Jim was an excellent pilot, and owned many airplanes. He logged time in many a different types of aircraft including time in the C130 and F100.
Jim loved taking his children on family vacations. Sometimes leading everyone on a hike, other times staying up late and telling great stories.
Jim had done more in his life than a lot of people would dream of doing in several life times. He had many titles: son, father, husband, soldier, doctor and friend.
His friends would say he would give you the shirt off his back, but don't make him mad. If you did… he would take his shirt back, and shoot you.
Jim would not want us to be sad. Jim would want us to remember to help others.
Jim is survived by the love of his life, Laura; his step-son Chris Bell; son Mathew Laughlin; daughters: Lindsay Amadeo (Gerard), Laina Mickus (Bob), Laura Olson (Anders), Lyric Phillips (Bob) and sister; Barbara Parker; ten grandchildren; and the mother of his children; Linda Laughlin.
