IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jeanette
Bates
December 6, 1934 – May 1, 2025
Lilly Jeanette Bates went to be with her Heavenly Father on Thursday, May 1st, 2025 (on her late husband's 90th birthday- a treasured reunion). She was born in Dallas, Texas, on December 6th, 1934, to Norman James Poole and Lemuel Lilly Cooksey. She was raised by her maternal grandmother, Zelda Carey Tracy, who instilled in her a strong work ethic and a fierce character. A proud city girl at heart, Jeanette brought warmth, adventure, and spirited energy to everyone who knew her.
Jeanette loved singing in church, and it was at a youth service in Wilmer-Hutchins that she met the love of her life, Floyd Earl Bates Sr. They were married on July 24th, 1954, and welcomed their son, Floyd Earl Jr., the following year. Their family continued to grow with the births of daughters Sherrie and Christy. In 1969, Jeanette traded city streets for country roads when she and Floyd moved their young family to Ennis, Texas, in support of his dream to become a weekend farmer. A few years later, they completed their family with the arrival of their youngest daughter, Becky.
Although she embraced rural life with grace, Jeanette was a strong and career-oriented woman whose ambition never wavered. She built an extraordinary 40-year career in banking and was proud to become the first female vice president at Wynnewood State Bank, breaking barriers with her integrity, leadership, and unwavering work ethic. She was widely respected by colleagues and customers alike, and her legacy of professionalism and integrity paved the way for many women to follow.
Jeanette also embraced the farm life with determination, and made their home a place of celebration, hosting countless family gatherings—especially Thanksgiving and Christmas, two of her favorite holidays. Jeanette was a gifted cook, always ready with a warm meal and an open door for anyone who lent a hand around the farm—or just stopped by for a visit. Many of those meals were served to her children's friends, who quickly came to know and love "Mrs. Bates" for her hospitality and her steady, loving presence.
Jeanette had an adventurous soul and a heart full of song. Whether working in the kitchen, riding around the farm, or simply passing time, she could be heard humming hymns and melodies. She was the best storyteller—her tales made people laugh, reflect, and feel right at home. She never met a stranger and was the kind of friend who showed up when it mattered most, offering encouragement, understanding, and loyalty.
In her later years, Jeanette became the devoted caretaker of her beloved Floyd, tending to him with patience, love, and remarkable strength. Her care was a living example of her deep devotion and servants heart.
Above all, Jeanette was endlessly supportive—a steady presence through seasons of change, a tireless encourager to her family, and a faithful partner to Floyd for 68 years. Her faith in Christ guided her life, and she served her family and church community with grace, humility, and joy. She was deeply proud of her children and grandchildren, always cheering them on in their endeavors.
Jeanette is survived by her son, Floyd Bates Jr. (Eldonna); daughters, Sherrie Barratt (Jerry), Christy Teeter (David), and Becky Frankiewicz; 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Earl Bates Sr.; her parents, Norman James Poole and Lemuel Lilly Cooksey; her grandmother, Zelda Carey Tracy; her brother, James Douglas Poole; and her son-in-law, Marek Frankiewicz.
Visitation will be held at Waxahachie Funeral Home on Saturday, May 3rd, 2025, from 5-7 pm. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, May 4th at 2pm at Sardis Methodist Church, with interment to follow at Sardis Cemetery.
