IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Rebecca Jolene
Smith
May 30, 1950 – February 19, 2022
Rebecca Jolene Smith, 71, passed away peacefully in her stateside home in Waxahachie, Texas surrounded by her children, grandchildren, siblings and extended family. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Beckie was known for her beauty, tenacity, wisdom, determination and caring service which will be remembered by the many she touched around the world.
Beckie was born in Waxahachie on May 30, 1950 to Delmer and Eleanor Guynes. She was the firstborn among her siblings, Patricia, Del Ray, and Janette. In 1954, their family left for Malaysia as missionaries where she spent the next 10 years of her life. After attending boarding school in California for one year, she returned to Waxahachie to finish high school. In 1966 Beckie entered Southwestern Assemblies of God College at the age of 16. There she met David Smith of Mt. Pleasant, Texas and they married on June 22, 1968. She and David served as youth pastors in Marshall, MO for two years. Beckie eagerly followed God's calling on her life to become a missionary, and in 1974, she and David left for Africa with their two sons, Kevin and Kent who were 4 and 2 years old. She jumped into full-time ministry with the Kenya Assemblies of God where she used her gifts in singing, playing the accordion, and leading children's and women's ministries.
Beckie loved the Word of God and always wanted to deepen her knowledge of Him which is evident in her diligent pursuit of ordination and a master's degree from AGTS. She pursued a second master's degree in Counselling Psychology from Southwestern to enable her to better love and care for the people she encountered.
Beckie bravely faced breast cancer and chemo when her daughters, Kimbra and Krista were only 6 and 4 years old. Since then, she has constantly given testimony to God's miraculous healing. This experience led her to begin a flourishing ministry in 2001 among Breast Cancer survivors in Mombasa, Kenya where she has lived for the past 42 years.
In Mombasa, her friends remember her as a role model, a beautiful soul, a great champion, a legend, and a brave warrior. They greatly honor her dedication to the education, awareness, screening, and treatment of breast cancer in Kenya. Among the Aga Khan Hospital community in Mombasa, she was known as 'doctor' because of her constant presence visiting cancer patients, mobilizing resources for their treatment, and selflessly, passionately, investing her energy to bring people hope.
Beckie was a beloved wife and mother who took time to pray individually for her children and grandchildren, who affectionately knew her as ShoSho. She spent herself planning and preparing everyone's favorite foods, as well as finding ways to connect personally, even though her family was scattered around the world. She loved spicy food, lots of bling, new shoes, teapots and matching outfits.
Throughout 50 years of missionary service, the deep desire of Beckie's life was to wholeheartedly know Jesus and make him known. One of her favorite verses was Psalm 107:9 which says, "He satisfies the longing soul, and fills the hungry with goodness". Today we rejoice that the longing of her soul is eternally satisfied.
Beckie is survived by her father; Delmer Guynes; her husband; David Smith, her children: Kevin and Miriam Smith, Kent and Michelle Smith, Kimbra and Nick Stuva, Krista and Caleb Fader; her grandchildren; Katie, Kaleb and Emma, Wesley, Micah, Lexxi and Aaron, Cory, Ethan, Tia, Liam, Gavin, Jono.
